Pre-Order: EASY ACTION / SNAKEWING “Dead City” split 7″/EP

UCR071_cover_promo (1) copyIT’S TIME.

Alright world, we’re finally unleashing this monster. You can now Pre-Order the Easy Action / Snakewing split 7″ EP entitled “Dead City” HERE. The record has 4 songs of pure malevolence. EASY ACTION’s first new record in OVER 4 YEARS finds them at their most terrifying. Fellow Detroit band SNAKEWING tow a harder line, rooted more in death metal meets 90′s metalcore. Brutal and crushing would be words I’d use to describe them.

If it matters to you: EASY ACTION features members of Negative Approach & Laughing Hyenas, SNAKEWING features a member of Break Anchor.

ALL THE PRE-ORDERS COME WITH A FREE SNAKEWING FULL LENGTH CD.

I’m not one for too much hyperbole, so I’ll let the music do the talking, stream EASY ACTION’s song “Better Off Dead” from this EP here:

The songs will be available for purchase digitally on April 2nd, 2013.
PRE ORDER THE 7″ HERE: http://undercomm.storenvy.com

The 7″s are available on clear red and clear orange/gold vinyl

The art was drawn and designed by famed poster artist Shawn K. Knight.

Our online store is back open!

imagesHey Friends,
I put our online store back in the open for business mode. I’ve decided to keep the cost for the US residents the same, so that will remain as a $4.99 all you can buy shipping option. The US rates didn’t go up as much, and what they have is negligible, so we can eat the cost there.

However, the international options have gone up considerably. While updating the base costs and per item costs – I hope that I’ve slightly over estimated the actual costs and I’ll be able to pay out some over-charge refunds as I have done in the past when the cost was less to ship than what the store calculated for the international orders. Keep in mind that how our store works is that the base shipping cost is for an LP, so if you’re just ordering a 7″ – the shipping will be much cheaper and I can refund the overages.

As the future orders come in for the next few weeks, I’m going to keep notes and dial in the charges a bit. Please bear with us as we adjust, it’s frustrating to know that people will have to pay the amounts that we have to charge, and I wish there was an alternate means to doing this. You can always email me directly (at: justin @ undercomm dot org) asking for an exact quote on shipping with a list of the items you wanted to order. It takes extra time, but I can make up an order box and calculate the shipping to what you’re ordering and send you an invoice.

Hope you’re all doing well.
-Justin.

Hey! Our store is in maintenance mode, here’s why:

Hey friends,
our online store is closed now until tomorrow or Sunday because the post office shipping rates officially go up tomorrow.

Once I get the new rates adjusted in the postage calculator, I’ll re-open the store and send a message out on our e-mailing list, the main website and here.
Click Here for details on the postage rate increase.

Enjoy your weekend, thanks for the support as always.
-Justin.

II. UCR turns 9 Years Old!

December 26th is the birthday for the label. Nine years ago we went from possible idea to actually creating albums and setting out on a journey, literally.

On December 26th, 2003 I left for tour with Haunted Life, a great Chicago hardcore band,
that took us from Indiana, to Tennessee, to Georgia, to Florida, to Alabama, back to Florida, to Arkansas and back home to Chicago (in a horrible snowstorm!). In-tow we had a box of 200 copies of the tour edition of Haunted Life’s “the Dust has Settled” CDEP (UCR002) with pretty sweet letterpressed and silk screened covers, and hand glued info on the inside of the CD sleeve. It wasn’t a smashing success, but that was our humble beginning.

Thanks for all the support over the past 9 years. I’ve gotten to work with so many friends and made 10 times as many in the process. We have released more records than I’d have ever expected, from bands I never thought was possible, and had so many great adventures along the way because of it. I’ve never compromised the original vision of the label, and I never will. I’m intensely proud that I’ve been able to genre jump as much as we have and I think there’s still a cohesion to it what we’re doing. From the ska records, to the comedy releases to the hardcore and punk rock records, and everything in between, to me it still makes sense. There’s a common theme of independent spirit running through them all. I cannot imagine doing things any other way.

I switch back and forth a lot between “we” and “I” a lot because it’s not really about me. I never do all the work. There’s a long list of friends that have helped with everything from picking me and a bunch of boxes up and driving me around town for things; to helping assemble the records; lent me their computer to design ads and flyers, the friends in other labels that are advice sounding boards; to hosting our website(s), to one special person that puts up with an apartment full of cardboard boxes endlessly cluttering up the place, and last but certainly not least anyone that enjoys/buys records from us, wears our shirts, reps the label on message boards, downloads the podcasts, etc… Your willingness to go on the ride with us is amazing and you’re an equal component in what we do.

IV. Winepress discography LP / release show at Ian’s Party this weekend!

We are re-releasing the WiNEPRESS discography – a classic nugget of early 90′s Chicagoland pop punk for the first time ever on vinyl…well… as the collection – It’s an exciting day!

Our forefather label Harmless Records originally put together this compilation back in 2001 and it was released on CD only, the band played a few reunion shows around it’s release as well. At the time I was working at Ryan from Winepress’s store in Lansing, IL called Bossa Nova, and until the show(s) happened, I only barely knew who the band was. That first reunion show at Off the Alley strongly cemented the band deep in my head and in my heart. They were a band from Chicago that I knew more in a historical sense than their music, and having a guy like Scott @ Harmless helping get everything in one place, reminding anyone that cared to track it down that yeah, they did some cool, fun songs, now you can hear them in one place. I always appreciated these efforts…so we’re reminding you again what great songs they are.

When it was announced that Winepress was going to play Ian’s Party 2013, I reached out to Ryan with the idea of “wouldn’t it be cool if we put the discography out on vinyl for the show?” He told me that would be amazing because the band wanted to bill this as their 20th anniversary show too! Excellent! So we were off and running. I quickly made calls, send masters off to the plant, got the records pressed (we made 100 blank label copies for the show) and that pretty much brings us up to speed on the whole project.

We made a Facebook page for the band too, please go LIKE that if you’re into that sort of thing:
www.facebook.com/winepressband

I put up the album streaming on our bandcamp page here:
undercomm.bandcamp.com/album/the-complete-recordings

We’ll be celebrating the bands 20 year anniversary this weekend at Ian’s Party 2013, please come hang out and sing along, pick up an LP too. Any remaining copies will be available for purchase starting on Sunday afternoon I’ll post a note on the Facebook page when they are up…or if any remain… we are going to press more and those will be ready later this month.

So we’re re-releasing the Winepress “the Complete Recordings” discography

We’re letting the cat out of the bag! Yesterday I posted this picture on the label Facebook page, dropped a few hints, entertained some guesses at what this might be:

Well today, we’re going to just get it out in the air and let you know that we are officially re-releasing the WiNEPRESS discography – a classic nugget of early 90′s Chicagoland pop punk for the first time ever on vinyl…well… as the collection – It’s an exciting day!

A perfect example of why I have such a fondness for weird band discographies stems from this era (not long after this I started wearing down the Ambition Mission folks to let me put their discography out, come to think of it – the picture of Jake and Bryan in drag in the CD is from that same weekend at Off the Alley). They were a band from Chicago that I knew more in a historical sense than their music, and having a guy like Scott @ Harmless helping get everything in one place, reminding anyone that cared to track it down that yeah, they did some cool, fun songs, now you can hear them in one place. I always appreciated these efforts.

I reconnected with the guys at the 2010 reunion show with the Mushuganas at Windy City Sound Clash Fest, where they played a mesmerizing set. I hadn’t seen any of them in a long time, but it was like a day hadn’t gone by. I quickly made calls, send masters off to the plant, got the records pressed (we made 100 blank label copies for the show) and that pretty much brings us up to today.

Never a dull moment in UnderComm-land…

I owe Ryan big-time, through his store (that I was a customer first and an an employee second) he made me buy Jawbreaker’s “24 Hour Revenge Therapy”. I’m pretty sure I bought Pegboy’s “Strong Reaction/Three Chord Monte” CD there too. Monumental. Life. Changing. Music. Came into my life at that time; Ryan will always have an association with those things, so to me this is just another part of returning the gift. It’s also Ryan’s birthday today, so this all worked out pretty conveniently, don’t you think?

I couldn’t be more honored to
a) re-release this into the world
b) directly re-release a Harmless Records album
c) Get to see some old friends smile and see them play some songs for old times sake – for many people that never had a chance to see them in the first place (it’s important to remember that I was in those shoes in 2001 too).

Here’s the new cover art:
Winepress CD cover

We made a facebook page, please go LIKE that if you’re into that sort of thing: www.facebook.com/winepressband

I put up the album streaming on our bandcamp page: undercomm.bandcamp.com/album/the-complete-recordings

Once we finalize the insert art I’ll put that up with the album as a pdf attachment and I’ll enable the download/purchase ability of the digital version, and I’ll keep you all posted on when you can pre-order the LP – I’m going to order a few hundred more after Ian’s Party with printed labels too.
