Well this is kinda crazy.
Underground Communique Records is 10 years old now.
The reality of this benchmark is pretty stunning, even to me. I don’t know if I really thought this label would last this long when I founded it a decade ago (Wow, a DECADE!) but given the fact that this label is run on like 95% enthusiasm alone, I’m glad that things haven’t changed much in this time, and what has changed has always been for the better.
I’m sometimes the biggest fan of the bands that we have been very lucky to get to work with. In turn, a big part of me doing the label all these years has been because I just wanted these people to continue writing songs, and then hoping other people find them and enjoy them as much as I do. I hope our little cult following continues growing and believing in what I’m doing and finding value in the music we are releasing together.
There’s a lot of the same people attending shows, booking shows, keeping the scene alive, as well as those still making essential music, in addition to the newer generation of fans, bands and songwriters. I think that may be one of my favorite parts of punk rock is that it stays with people. There’s a good chunk of members from past bands we’ve worked with who have all stuck with it and are still making music. I feel really good about that.
We already have a bunch of cool releases planned out for 2014, and we intend to throw some shows throughout the year to celebrate this anniversary too. That may include a reunion here & there, some veterans that have been keeping busy for years beyond our time together, new bands from familiar faces…and some new faces as well. It’s going to be a cool year.
So, on that subject: Vito from MP Shows is going to let me hitch our name to Ian’s Party in a little over a week (January 3rd-5th, 2014)!
Six of our past and present bands we’ve worked with are playing:
Vacation Bible School
the Mons – RECORD RELEASE show for their 7″ too.
I’ll probably have the distro at these shows too…well, probably just at Township. Please come out, say hello if you want, and see some bands play.
Thank you to anyone that took the time to read this, and/or has ever listened to one of our bands, bought something from us or them, taken pictures of them or the label directly, or written about something we’ve worked on, and everything I said last year still applies.
I don’t know where we’ll be in another 10 years, but I guess we’ll see when we get there.
All the best,
